Internationally known Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein will have his first one-man museum exhibition in the United States, opening at the Legion of Honor in the summer of 2004. The exhibition, Gottfried Helnwein: The Child features a major theme that has appeared in his work over the last 35 years. For Helnwein, the child is the symbol of innocence, but also innocence betrayed. In today’s world, the malevolent forces of war, poverty, sexual exploitation, and the numbing predatory influence of modern media assault the virtue of children. Helnwein, who grew up in Austria in the somber atmosphere of a defeated country in the years following World War II, has an emotional tie to children who have been robbed of experiencing childhood without trauma. ...

'Personal Jesus' says everything that I would say if I were to write a song right now. I was listening to it on a CD I just bought because I wanted to really take a step away from the world. I wasn't sure if I was going to put out a 'best of' or if I was going to do anything in general with music, because there's a frustration level that the more commercial you are, the more marginal you are - also, the lack of art that exists in entertainment, and the lack of interest. * Helnwein's Epiphany I has been up on our site for years now. For a while I used it as wallpaper on my desktop. Perhaps that explains how the first hypertext poem came to be one about the Virgin. But as I struggled with updating the site, I checked all my old resources and came across materials that explain Helnwein's commitments and meanings far better than I could alone. ...

...Sicher kann Photorealismus langweilig sein... dieser typische mit Motiven wie Autos, Kühlschränken etc., der in den 60ern und 70ern 'modern' war, kann mich auch nicht begeistern... Aber Helnwein nutzt diese Malweise ja, um den besonderen Ausdruck von Qual in Kindergesichtern darzustellen, was er, meiner Ansicht nach, so gekonnt tut, dass man seine Bilder fühlen kann... Ganz besonders meine ich da - wie ars diabolicus auch - die Reihe riesiger Kinderportraits in Köln damals...
Die richtig 'harten' Bilder (die entstellten Körper und Gesichter) sind ausserdem auch gar nicht photorrealistisch...
Und: Helnwein ist ja nicht nur Maler, sondern auch Aktionskünstler, was ihn zu einer vielseitigen - und damit noch mal interessanteren (ich kann meine Begeisterung einfach nicht zügeln ) - Künstlerpersönlichkeit macht... ...
